When Do Babies Get Teeth

When Do Babies Get Teeth?

As we’re looking at everything teeth-related today, why not start at the beginning?

Milk teeth, also known as baby teeth, primary or deciduous teeth, are the first set of teeth that humans develop. The development of these teeth begins in the prenatal stage, even before the baby is born. They usually begin to emerge when a child is between 6 and 12 months old, and this process is commonly referred to as “teething.”

How Many Baby Teeth Fall Out?

By the time a child reaches 3 years of age, they can expect to have a complete set of 20 baby teeth, which includes 10 teeth on the top and 10 teeth on the bottom, all of which will fall out eventually. These teeth play a crucial role in helping children eat, speak, and develop proper oral hygiene habits. Maintaining the health and cleanliness of milk teeth is essential, as it can help prevent issues when permanent adult teeth eventually grow in.

As the child grows older, typically around the age of 5 or 6, their milk teeth will start to loosen and gradually fall out. This process is natural and allows room for the adult teeth to grow in shortly after. The transition from baby teeth to adult teeth continues until the child is about 12 or 14 years  old.

To learn more about caring for your baby’s first teeth and managing teething, consult your pediatrician or pediatric dentist, who can provide guidance and recommendations tailored to your child’s specific needs.

When Do Adult Teeth Come In

When Do Adult Teeth Come In?

Adult teeth, also known as permanent teeth, begin to replace baby teeth during a child’s developmental years. Permanent teeth will begin to erupt around 6 years of age. By the ages of 12 to 14, most children will have lost all of their baby teeth, which will have been replaced by a full set of adult teeth.

How many teeth does an adult have?

A complete set of adult teeth comprises 32 teeth in total. This includes the wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, which are situated all the way at the back of the mouth. In some cases, people may have extra (supernumeric) or missing teeth, meaning they will have more or less than 32 teeth in total.

Wisdom teeth usually emerge much later in life, typically between the ages of 17 and 21. However, not everyone will develop wisdom teeth, and some people may have fewer than four or none at all. Dentists can provide guidance on wisdom teeth and, through X-rays, can track their development and potential issues.

The Different Types of Teeth

The Different Types Of Teeth

Different types of teeth serve various functions in the mouth, aiding in the process of breaking down food for digestion. There are four primary types of teeth:

  1. Incisors: These are the front teeth, with four on the top and four on the bottom. Incisors are used for chopping and cutting food into small pieces. They have a flat, sharp edge, making them well-suited for this task.
  2. Canine teeth: Positioned next to the incisors, there are two canines in the top jaw and two in the bottom jaw. Canine teeth are designed to help tear chewy food, such as meat. They are characterised by their pointed, sharp edges, which allow them to grip and tear food effectively. Compared to other teeth types, canines are teeth which have the longest root.
  3. Premolars: Located next to the canine teeth, a full set of adult teeth typically contains eight premolars, with four in the top jaw and four in the bottom jaw. Premolars are used for grinding and crushing food into smaller pieces. These teeth are larger and wider than incisors and canines, with a flat surface area on the bottom that enables efficient grinding and crushing. Traditionally, these teeth were removed when a patient would undergo braces if they suffered from severe crowding issues.
  4. Molars: Positioned at the back of the mouth, a full set of adult teeth should have eight molars in total, with four on the top jaw and four on the bottom jaw. Molars are the strongest teeth and are essential for grinding food into a consistency safe for swallowing. Their large, flat surfaces and strong roots make them effective at breaking down food into smaller particles.

Each type of tooth plays a crucial role in the process of chewing and breaking down food, which is essential for proper digestion. Maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups can help ensure the health and longevity of your teeth.

Wisdom Teeth Symptoms

Wisdom teeth are sometimes referred to as third molars. In some cases, people may experience problems when their wisdom teeth begin to come through. These issues can arise due to the teeth’s positioning, inadequate space in the mouth, or the direction in which they are growing. Complications with wisdom teeth can result in pain and more serious problems, which may require their removal.

The removal of wisdom teeth depends on their position in the mouth. In some instances, extraction can be performed at a regular dental practice using only local anesthesia. However, more complicated cases might require hospitalisation and the use of general anesthesia for the procedure.

Regular dental check-ups and consultations with your dentist can help identify any potential issues with your adult teeth, including wisdom teeth. Maintaining good oral hygiene and seeking prompt professional advice when problems arise can contribute to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

The Parts of the Teeth

The Parts Of The Teeth

Teeth are complex structures with various components that work together to ensure proper function and health. Here are the different parts of teeth:

  1. Crown: The crown is the visible part of the tooth that sits above the gum line. It is the part of the tooth responsible for biting and chewing food.
  2. Enamel: The enamel is a hard, shiny layer that covers the crown of the tooth. It is the hardest material in the human body and serves to protect the sensitive inner parts of the tooth from damage and decay.
  3. Dentine: Dentine is the substance that makes up most of the tooth’s structure, lying beneath the enamel. It provides additional protection for the inner part of the tooth, called the pulp.
  4. Pulp: The pulp is the innermost part of the tooth, containing blood vessels and nerve endings. A strong blood supply helps keep the tooth alive and healthy, while the nerve endings send messages to the brain, alerting you to the temperature of your food or if the tooth is damaged or decayed.
  5. Cementum: Cementum is a layer of material that covers and protects the root of the tooth, which also contains the pulp. This part of the tooth is below the gum line and is anchored in the jawbone.
  6. Periodontal fibres: These fibres connect the tooth to the jawbone, providing stability and support. They are part of the periodontal ligament, which is essential for maintaining the tooth’s position within the jaw and for withstanding the forces generated during chewing and biting.

Understanding the various parts of a tooth is crucial for maintaining good oral health. Regular dental check-ups and proper oral hygiene can help protect these components and ensure the health and longevity of your teeth.
